Hedge fund manager and New York Mets baseball team owner Steven Cohen has already begun to invest in a four-day work week. Cohen isn't alone in forecasting a four-day work week. Jefferies thinks artificial intelligence will make workers more efficient and eventually lead to a four-day work week becoming the norm, according to a note from June 2023. Bank of America also expects the changing post-pandemic work landscape may result in a shorter work week. Opposition to change Opponents to a shorter work week, however, argue that such a change is both politically and economically unfeasible.

As the oldest GenZers reach marrying age in their mid-20s, they’re increasingly putting their own spin on nuptials, which includes letting go of some antiquated traditions. The Knot, a top wedding planning and wedding vendor marketplace, surveyed more than 9,000 couples in the US who either took the plunge last year, or are planning to in 2024, to understand evolving approaches that couples are taking to wedding planning. In terms of the total cost of the wedding, couples said they spent an average of $35,000 on their ceremony and reception in 2023, up from an average of $30,000 the prior year, according to The Knot. “Millennials and Gen Z are getting very creative in making these celebrations their own in new and interesting ways,” Chi said. Candles instead of flowers on the tables added elegance and also helped control costs, Dylan said.

Is electric vehicle ownership bipartisan?
  + stars: | 2024-02-21 | by ( Alex | Leeds Matthews | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
The data doesn’t include each voter with an electric vehicle, but it does offer some insight into political attitudes among consumers. Currently, the most widely available electric vehicles options are luxury brands, while mainstream consumers have more limited options. “We’re also seeing that things are really changing over time… That speaks to the fact that the economic and pollution benefits of electric vehicles don’t obey political boundaries.”Still, public opinion research suggests interest in electric vehicles has some partisan roots, even if the landscape may be changing. A 2023 Gallup poll found that 71% of Republicans would not consider buying an electric vehicle, compared with 17% of Democrats. More than one-third of electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles were registered in California, according to data from the US Department of Energy in 2022.

Lower courts used the decision to uphold a 2020 National Marine Fisheries Service rule that herring fishermen pay for monitors who track their fish intake. A group of commercial fishermen appealed the decision to the Supreme Court. They lost in the lower courts, which relied on the Chevron decision to sustain the regulation. The Supreme Court itself hasn't invoked the Chevron decision since Trump's justices began arriving on the court in 2017, the first year of the Republican's administration. ___Follow the AP's coverage of the U.S. Supreme Court at https://apnews.com/hub/us-supreme-court.

Over the past few months, hundreds of Jersey Shore residents have staged demonstrations opposing Ocean Wind 1, an offshore wind farm being developed by a subsidiary of Orsted, a Danish company. Some have painted these anti-wind crusaders as Jersey Shore versions of the Cape Cod residents fighting to preserve the view from their multimillion-dollar homes. New wind turbines, solar panels and other clean energy infrastructure are being built before our eyes, and in some cases in our hometowns. Oil and gas companies, which have a lot to lose, have exploited this feeling to great effect. Other groups fighting wind projects say they want to protect whales but are funded by oil interests.

Top intelligence and law enforcement officials in Washington are issuing a stark warning to American companies: The Chinese government wants to replace you. Asked whether the Chinese government wants to compete with or eliminate American companies, FBI Director Christopher Wray told CNBC: "Well, their definition of competing, I think, involves embracing the idea of eliminating." The paid-in foreign investment reached 127.69 billion yuan, up 14.5% year on year. Foreign companies including US investors have been upbeat about the China market and plan to expand in China. The son of a sea captain, Erdogan has faced stiff political headwinds ahead of Sunday's election: he was already facing blame over an economic crisis when a devastating earthquake hit in February. Critics accused his government of a slow response and lax enforcement of building rules, failures they said could have cost lives. Two days before the vote, Erdogan said he came to office through the ballot boxes and if he had to, would leave the same way. A veteran of more than a dozen election victories, the 69-year-old Erdogan has taken aim at his critics in typically combative fashion. "I swear, Erdogan can solve it with a flick of his wrist," she said at a market in central Istanbul.
Full-face snorkel masks have been a subject of debate amongst the scientific community. The fit, healthy 59-year-old had snorkeled before, but this was the first time she'd used a full-face mask. While it may sound like a freak accident, Standley's narrow escape may indicate a more serious issue involving full-face snorkel masks. British woman Angela Kearn, 63, died while snorkeling in the Red Sea in Egypt after she used a full-face mask from a Decathlon sporting goods store. But Caroline Topping, the coroner, also wrote: "The use of a full face snorkel mask contributed to the death in two ways."
The determination is intact," European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde said in remarks after the policy decision. "There is no tradeoff between price stability and financial stability ... we are addressing the price stability issue by raising the interest rate by 50 basis points ... Beyond the rate increase, the Fed will also be debating changes to its policy statement that could prove consequential. In crafting their next policy statement officials will have to decide, for example, whether to continue to anticipate the need for "ongoing increases" in the policy interest rate, or to temper that seemingly open-ended commitment with language that indicates rate hikes could pause at any moment, given the new risks. They will also be issuing new economic and interest rate projections that could add a further dose of caution.

The US housing market is firmly in a recession as existing home sales keep sliding. Nadia Evangelou of the National Association of Realtors shared what's next for the housing market. The trajectory of the housing market is heavily dependent on mortgage rates, Evangelou noted. But that's no guarantee as the Federal Reserve's interest rate-hiking cycle affects US Treasuries, which in turn sway mortgage rates, she said. So for that reason, we think that mortgage rates usually are pricing some of these upcoming rate hikes."
